The secret to creating a great bathroom lies not only in how it looks but the way it makes you feel. Four women reveal how they did it.

Hollywood glamour
Helen Green, interior designer

Helen Green has a fascination for 1930s design and fondness for silver-screen Hollywood icons- the combination of which gives her crisp, contemporary interiors obvious sophistication and soul, as beautifully illustrated in her bathroom. 'It is essential to balance luxury and glamour with calm and function- with the minimum of fuss,' she explains. Helen has opted for concealed cabinets behind cleverly hinged mirrors as she hates 'bulging shelves', and displays her many beautiful bottles of perfume, bathing scents and oils in carefully lit rosewood wall cabinets. The bath and shower are separate ('a must') and the sliding door between her bathroom and dressing room is entirely mirrored on the bathroom side to give her a vast, floor-length mirror. 'It is difficult to get down to such honest simplicity, while at the same time creating a sophisticated space, but that for me is the major point of a well-designed bathroom.
