Ask An Intern: What is the Helen Green Interior Design Internship Like?

Helen Green Design sits down with Ella Goodsell, previous Intern at our studio, to discover more about her experience with our interior design and interior architecture internship.

Ella Goodsell has a degree in Interior Architecture and Design and an MA in Interior Design, which she studied at the University of Westminster. Ella began the internship in mid-July 2019 and left mid-August 2019.

How did you find out about the Helen Green Design internship?

I was very fortunate and had the pleasure of meeting Laura Spears, Operations Director at Allect Design Group, which Helen Green Design is a part of, at a social event. Laura handed me her business card and told me to contact her once I had finished my studies.

What inspired you to work in interior design?

My mother is a creative woman, and so my childhood was filled with helping her to paint the house, craft projects and being taken around salvage yards or antique shops. She has an eye for detail, which she has passed onto me. I discovered from an early age that I use my brain to think in a very visual way, which she encouraged me to pursue academically.

What else do you enjoy about interior design?

My interest in design is quite broad, in an architectural sense I am interested in the roles of interiors in the built environment and also the domesticity of interiors. For example, what makes a home to a person.

Three ‘best moments’ during your internship?

My first ‘best moment’ would be helping to finish the final staging of a property in Chelsea Harbour and seeing the results of this. The second, would be working closely and being mentored by Senior Designer Alexandra on a project in Barbados. Thirdly and finally, I would always look forward to the CPD sessions every Thursday to learn about new suppliers and products that are on the market.

Any tips for someone looking to do an internship with us?

My advice would be – don’t be afraid to ask questions and ask to get involved with every part of the design process. Also, don’t feel like you are supposed to know everything straight away, if you’re unsure – ask for help, it’s much more productive. Be friendly and put yourself out there to be as social as you can with your colleagues. It is worth noting that making a good impression and have a good network is an important thing in this industry. Interior Design is a small world. Good luck!
