The Power of Bespoke: Designing a Sofa That’s More Than a Seat
At Helen Green Design, luxury is personal. Bespoke design brings originality, craftsmanship, and a deeper connection to the spaces we inhabit. This project is a clear expression of that philosophy.
The client approached Helen Green Design to refresh their living space, seeking a design informed by a love of travel, oriental influence, and a curated collection of sculptural objects. A key challenge was rethinking the traditional role of side tables. Instead of placing tables on either side of the sofa, an integrated solution was developed, with side tables built directly into the sofa’s structure.
This decision opened up a further design opportunity. The visible fixing of the tables became a feature in itself, allowing the back of the sofa to evolve into a sculptural element. A cherry blossom–inspired metalwork detail was introduced, transforming the sofa into a piece that reads as part of the room’s art collection as well as its furniture.

Why Bespoke Matters
Designing a piece specifically for a space allows it to move beyond trend. Proportion, materiality, and form are carefully considered to reflect both the room and the client’s lifestyle. Every element of this sofa was shaped with intention, resulting in a piece that feels personal and enduring.
Bespoke design offers the freedom to tailor comfort and explore distinctive materials, from finely chosen fabrics to intricate metal finishes. More than furniture, a bespoke piece becomes part of a client’s story.

Craftsmanship and Collaboration
The project was realised in collaboration with specialist UK-based artisans. Anka Bespoke engineered and crafted the bespoke metalwork, navigating complex technical requirements, while Ateliers London produced the upholstered sofa and worked closely with Anka to ensure a seamless, integrated result.
The final piece is both functional and sculptural - a refined statement that balances comfort with visual impact. It reflects the client’s individuality and Helen Green Design’s commitment to purposeful design, sustainable longevity, and creating pieces intended to be cherished for years to come.
