Style Tip: Home Office Designs Inspired by Father’s Day
With Father’s Day nearly upon us, at Helen Green Design we consider a selection of interiors, accessories and designs with a masculine tone, inspired by this weekend’s celebrations. With a selection of home office schemes from a range of our projects, we have listed how to design a home office that incorporates functional form, as well as exceptional design. To set the tone, our team has been experimenting in the design studio, curating a ‘Father’s Day’ home office with marble shelving, leather lined finishes on a velvet green chair and patterned cushioning.
Brighten the space with colourful artwork
Offices and office spaces are not recognised as being the most colourful or vibrant places, and yet, this is where most of us spend our time every day. With the opportunity to design a home office brings the chance to be truly expressive in style, personality, taste… and colour. One way of injecting a pop of colour into a home office, is with a bold piece of artwork, and this does not necessarily have to coordinate with the rest of the colour scheme (see image one). Instead, it captures the essence of creativity in the space.
Design and style your shelves
Shelves are of course for practical use, but there are several ways to utilise them in the home office. They can be styled with personalised trinkets, or carefully placed books based on length, colour, or shape. In some home offices, shelves serve a purpose as the main focal point of the room, and so it is worth giving them plenty of attention. If you have some symmetry to work with, you could even mirror one side with the other.
Desk design, with or without drawers
For furniture choice in the space, there is the option to be bold and strong with a hard-wood, walnut traditional desk. Alternatively, a decision can be made to be slightly more contemporary with leather lined drawers within the desk and on top. If choosing drawers within a desk, three is the magic number.
Tie in a pattern within the carpet, and cushions
A home office needs to feel ‘office-like’ and professional, as well as have a feeling of homeliness – so don’t be afraid to add patterns and textures into the space in the form of carpets, decorative cushions and rugs. The patterned rug beneath the desk (image 2) adds an intriguing dynamic into an otherwise more calm space.
Add a dose of nature into the space
Flowers, foliage and plants are good for the soul. Studies have shown that simply adding some greenery in the form of indoor plants can have major positive benefits for employees and those who work from home too.
A 2010 study by the new University of Technology, Sydney, found significant reductions in stress among workers when plants were introduced to their workspace. Results included a 37% fall in reported tension and anxiety; a 58% drop in depression or dejection; a 44% decrease in anger and hostility; and a 38% reduction in fatigue. Add a personal touch
From personal ornaments to photos in frames, artwork, sculptures, or rowing oars – there are plenty of ways to add a personal touch to your home office space and make it work for you.
