Masterpiece 2020: Our Favourite Artists for a Design Scheme

One of Chelsea’s iconic summer events, Masterpiece London is taking place currently on their online platform: Masterpiece Online. Showcasing works from 138 exhibitors, who would have been showing physically at The Royal Hospital, Chelsea, are taking part in a weeklong programme of content. Images, videos, interviews, live panel discussions and private tours are some of the different ways art enthusiasts can explore the wide-ranging and highly renowned exhibitors from the fair. Some of Helen Green Design’s interior designers have shared their favourite artists for a design scheme.

Our Favourite Artists for a Design Scheme

Brendan Stuart (pictured left in Townhouse, Belgravia)

Brendan creates large abstract paintings of the rock pools, lichen and organisms found on the Pembrokeshire coast in Wales. His paintings are large scale and are created from oil and wax on linen.

“Brendan is one of my favourite artists as the detail in his large paintings add texture and intrigue to a room.”

Tracey Emin

Tracey is a highly renowned British artist whose work is inspired by her personal life events. Through her work she reveals her hopes, humiliations, failures and successes.

“There is a certain madness to her work, but it is deliberate and beautiful, a visual representation of passion.”

Jennifer Jarvis – Senior Designer

Robyn Denny

Robyn was part of a group of abstract artists who transformed British art in the late 1950s. Having passed through London art schools in the 1950s, the group took a diversion from the preceding era. His pared down compositions formed the majority of his work and lead it into the international mainstream.

“We recently included Robyn’s work in our Townhouse, Belgravia project. His pared down aesthetic complements the colour palette of the living room and frames either side of the fireplace. The juxtaposition of his minimalist art and the detailed cornicing and fireplace work to create a timeless design scheme.”

Charles Hadcock

Charles is a British Sculptor whose sculptures reflect his interest in geology, engineering and mathematics and are enriched by references to music and poetry. These aspects are combined within his work both openly or as hidden jewels.

“Art is typically used for interior spaces however, the ability to use art in outdoor spaces, whether it is gardens or terraces is an important art of the overall design aesthetic. Charles’ versatility with manipulating his sculptures to suit interior and exterior spaces creates a distinct narrative fitting to any architectural or interior style.”

L.S. Lowry

Laurence’s drawings and paintings are highly recognised internationally. The British born artist frequently depicted Pendlebury, Lancashire where he lived and worked for more than 40 years.

“Classic artists are some of my favourites in particular L.S. Lowry. I find his industrial landscapes with the matchstick people extremely interesting. You can look at one of his landscapes for a long time and constantly find something new in the scene.”

Shirazeh Houshiary

Shirazeh was born in Shiraz, Iran before moving to London when she was 19. Having studied at Chelsea School of Art her work reflects her “breath” by blending her “own existence, transcending name, nationality, cultures”. Her practice encompasses painting, installation, architectural projects and film.

“I admire Shirazeh’s work as she explores her own cultural identity and sense of self through her work, being of Iranian descent and British. Her paintings are built up of many layers to produce the final outcome where she uses pencil to inscribe words within her artwork and building on this with pigment. The dynamic end result draw you into her work. The undulation of colour leads to a sense of infinity and depth to question what is on the other side and searching for the answers within yourself.”

Claude Monet

The prolific Impressionist is one of the most recognisable artists of the 19th Century movement. Monet rejected the traditional approach to landscape painting and broke away from copying old masters and instead learnt from his friends and nature itself. His work was concerned with capturing light and natural forms found in the surrounding environment.

“Monet’s Water Lilies series provides the perfect combination of classical and modern elements for the contemporary home. The colour palette provides a harmonious balance that works in both a neutral and more colourful space.”

Sarah Dwyer

Born in Cork, Ireland, Sarah now lives and works in London. Her work is both figurative and abstract and are created by working and reworking the surfaces of the piece.

“Whispering Cheik by Sarah Dwyer is one of my favourite pieces of art. The dynamic piece has a sense of balance through its form and colour palette. It is the perfect focal point in the living room at our Family House, Chelsea project and formed the starting point to the design scheme in the room.”
