“Every man needs a place to call his own, whether it’s a single room or an entire home – every man needs a sanctuary. If you had the deal sealed until you unlocked the door and she stepped inside, now is definitely the time to make some adjustments. When your abode becomes a point of embarrassment, it’s time to call in some professional help and get a woman’s perspective on things, we did just that. Helen Green Design had these top tips for bringing your bachelor pad up to scratch.

Artwork
‘Invest in artwork and ensure that it is hung at the correct height for the room; it will give style and personality to your space. If you have a favourite piece, be it artwork or a statement accessory, use it as the starting point for a room scheme and work around it, opting for additional pieces in an understated palette and finish.’

Technology
‘Technology shouldn’t be a feature in a space unless it is a dedicated media room. Where possible, we recess televisions in walls or conceal them within joinery which gives more wall space for artwork and ensures the space is functional for relaxing as well as entertaining.’

Declutter
‘Adhering to the ‘a place for everything and everything in its place’ adage is important for keeping a space free from clutter. Equally as important is the creation of a space which is a representation of you, your likes and interests. Keeping accessories on display which have meaning to you will act as talking point in a room.’

Colours
‘Choose a simple and masculine palette; move away from the expected greys and try to create a little more interest with dark petrol blues and warm earthy tones.’

Fragrance
‘A room diffuser will eliminate unpleasant or stale aromas and should highlight masculine notes such as oud, tobacco and citrus. Similarly, scented candles are an easy way to create a welcoming and intimate atmosphere and are available in a wide selection of scents and holders.’

Booze
‘Create a bar area or a bar cart if space is short; they are perfect for parties and a great way to demonstrate your knowledge as a connoisseur and taste in spirits and glassware’

Fabrics
‘Think about texture and above all avoid artificial fabrics; you want to create a welcoming and tactile space. Try adding a chunky knit throw to a sofa – linens, velvets, soft wools and cashmere as well as butter soft leather are all subtly sophisticated choices.’

Lighting
‘Lighting should be used to create atmosphere. Avoid bright overhead lighting and instead opt for ambient lighting on a dimmer switch. This will give a soft overall illumination to a room, as well as accent lighting which will add drama by creating visual interest around a specific piece in a room. Invest in some smart table lamps for added elegance.’”
